Pauper Top Deck Averages
I'm starting to think about playing competitively. Unlike casual where focus on your deck's general effectiveness, competitive play is all about understanding the metagame. Competitive play also tends to be more expensive than casual because everybody wants the same (best) cards. For this reason I decided to start with Classic Pauper; I don't want to be able to to use cost as an excuse for me losing. I shall spare no expense! As long as it's common.
I started studying the Classic Pauper Metagame. I found these threads over at pdcmagic very helpful:
Official Classic Deck Index
Pauper Dailies: Metagame Analysis
Reading through the second thread I learned that the top decks of each Daily Event are recorded here.
Clicking through a few of the event records gives you a good feel for the format, but partially because I thought it would be useful and partially because writing code over the three day weekend seemed liked a good idea (for some reason), I wrote some scripts which mine this data and run analysis over it.
Once I got all the data into a clean format I wanted to identify the different types. How many Affinity, how many Infect, etc. My first thought was to add rules to identify each deck like "If deck has 4 couldposts then it's a post deck". But I decided instead to just group by deck similarity based on cards in common. If two decks have more than 50 cards in common (counting main and sideboard) then I consider them to be the same type. This ended up working pretty well and I used this to form groups.
Once I had groups I wanted to see what those groups were. The first take was just dump out all the decklists or a representative decklist, but I realized what I really wanted was an average of the decks. I remember Magic Pro Frank Karsten talking about Deck Averages before.
From July 1st to Sept 7th (just over two months) there were 273 Pauper Daily Events. Each deck finishing 3-1 or better was recorded - 2652 in all. Here are the 16 most common deck types and their average cardlists.

Interestingly, MUC was split into three different "sub-groups". All the other decks seem to fit within the same group. If a card's average was less than 0.2 it was omitted.
Those were the most common decks that win in Daily Events, but what I didn't show were the least common. Who was able to 3-1 a Daily Event vs the usual suspects with something different? Join me next week for an Ode to Rouge!

I would really like a copy of this software. Would you be interested in selling/licensing me a copy?
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the interest, but I'm not in a position to distribute software.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if you have any ideas about what other data you'd like to see in a future article feel free to let me know.
I do have some other ideas of some additional data I would like to see, but before I get into that I just wanted to take a moment and check the current data you are presenting.
ReplyDeleteI have taken a little time to go over your data. I think this is a nice first attempt at daily event analysis. I think though that there could be some improvement in your calculations however.
The most glaring and obvious issue is that there are 3 different MUC decks listed. This points the way to a potentially larger problem. I think the issue occurs in your grouping algorithm.
The first issue is that you are requiring decks to have 50 cards in common in order to be considered the same deck. I think this number is quite high which is leaving your analysis somewhat fragmented. I wonder at what point these 3 MUC deck averages would merge into one if you started lowering the needed cards in common to below 50. 45? 40? I would suggest that you try this and see what the results would be. Because if you truly are looking for the average MUC meta deck, you wouldn’t want to see 3 discreet groups of the same deck. The only reason you would want to see three discreet groups of the same deck is if you were planning on playing the deck and was wondering which cards were the most successful.
Since the intent of your article is not to discuss the many versions of MUC, I decided to take a little time and average these three MUC decks together and see what the result would be:
Result:

I performed this calculation by multiplying the card average you gave by the deck count, thus resolving the actual number of cards in the average. So for example in your #11 Deck MUC with a count of 66, I took Island which you showed as an average of 18.8 x 66 for the deck count = 1240.8 which I rounded to 1241. I did this for each card in all 3 decks, then added together all the like cards, and re-averaged all the cards in the MUC strategy by a count of 155, which I arrived at by adding your deck counts of 66, 55, and 34 for the three respective decks. This landed the new averaged MUC at #7 on your list, just behind Goblins. Which I have to admit, surprised me quite a bit. I didn’t think that MUC appeared this often in the daily pauper’s that I had viewed.
ReplyDeleteThis got me wondering about the algorithm that you are using to group the decks. Does your existing algorithm allow a single deck to be counted toward more than one group? This is a critical question since if the answer is yes, then there is the potential for the end analysis to be skewed. If a particular MUC deck can be grouped with more than one subgroup, then in the end analysis it would appear that MUC is far more successful than it is in reality. Were there really 155 total MUC decks counted by your 3 subdivisions? Or are some decks being counted more than once?
I decided to do a little checking, I added up the total number of decks in your deck counts between the 16 decks you have listed. The total came to 2394. That number seems quite high since you listed the total number of decks in the raw data at 2652. That would mean there were only 258 decks that finished 4-0 or 3-1 during this period that were not of these 16 groups. That number seems quite low. If this is true there doesn’t seem to be much of a rogue presence in the online daily’s (certainly not a successful presence anyway). Do these 16 decks you have listed really account for 90% of the 4-0 and 3-1 decks? I am curious to hear your answer since knowing this answer provides interesting insight into the current meta. But I can think of a number of successful decks that are missing from this list that I think would account for much more than another 258 decks. Such as UB Post, Stompy (yes I realize that stompy is by and large replaced by infect, but I still seem to see a number of them in the dailies), UR Storm, and Multicolored Infect to name a few. I would think that there would be another 258 decks in just sub-groups of the decks you listed here.
I look forward to your response..
I looked backed over the data. Each deck should only be one type. Also doubled checked the numbers it looks right: 90% of the winning decks are one of those 16 types. To be clear, there are a ton of other types, 118 types total, but the quantity of these is tiny.
ReplyDeleteI put the raw data here if you to check it out:
http://www.mediafire.com/?zpljqxv2gahcb2v
One file has the full report (all 188 types) the other has every decklist.
Thank you very much for providing me that insight. Going over the decklists that were in the files, I noticed that after each card in each deck was a true or false. I was just wondering what that boolean variable was for.
ReplyDeleteI was also wondering if the 4-0 decklists were much different than than 3-1 decklists. would the 4-0's have a different top 16? or top 10?
If I was going to use this data to play competitively, I think it would be a handy data base to have. If you ended up getting matched up against someone like Ehustle who only ever plays one deck, you would know what you are facing before he even plays his first card.
Other than that I think the data you have produced is pretty much everything you need to analyze the meta.
The Boolean is whether the card is in the sideboard.
ReplyDeleteIt might be interesting to compare 4-0s vs 3-1s, but in this case I treated them the same.
Glad you like it!
Very nice but a couple months old now, how hard would it be to update this?
ReplyDeleteNot too difficult. I'm considering setting up a kind of monthly report. Stay tuned...
ReplyDeleteIlooked through seems like a lot of MUC recently would really appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteAlso do you follow Pez? would love to see something similar to that for Pez
ReplyDeletePez... candy?
ReplyDeletepeasant although from asking around it seems pauper has more or less killed the format (basically pauper with 5 uncommon allowed)
ReplyDeleteAh. I never played. It sounds interesting, but the officially support classic pauper filter is too convenient.
ReplyDeleteThe Pauper Krew clan now has a bot on their forum that performs this exact function. They have back data from about February of 2011 through January 2012 in weekly and monthly reports. I am not sure if They call it DAV bot (Daily's Average Bot). They currently have a demo if anyone would like to see it at:
ReplyDeletehttp://t25.se/pauperkrew.com/averages.php
The Demo login is:
ID: Pauper
PW: DeckStats
Both are case sensitive. The demo will only be up for a limited amount of time. Probably a few weeks to a month.
I now have our deck average database for the pauper dailies online at www.pauperkrew.com if anyone would like to use it for metagame analysis. To date we have been manually updating the database, but we do have a webcrawler in the works that will be installed soon that will automatically update our database every week with new stats. Stay tuned!
